FAQ

  • What is this app about?
Illuminant is an off camera light source app to supply additional light to a scene

  • Does Illuminant take pictures?
No, Illuminant is only a lighting app to assist taking pictures with a camera or another device

  • What is the camera icon for, then?
Illuminant uses the device camera to measure the color of the ambient, incident, or reflective light

  • Do I need an iPad to use Illuminant?
Illuminant performs best on a full size iPad due to the physics of light and the amount of light produced. But it performs respectably on an iPad Mini, iPhone, or an iPod Touch

  • I have an old iPad. Will it work?
Illuminant will work on any device running iOS 6.1 or up. If your device is capable of running iOS 6.1, it will work.

  • Can I use Illuminant instead of a flash?
Other than some technical differences in the usage (Illuminant supplies continuous light), the light level produced by an iPad or an iPhone does not compare to a strobe/flash, so cannot compete with other light sources like a flash or the sun. Although you can still use Illuminant as a secondary or a fill light to help with the shadows

  • My camera already has a flash on it. Why do I need this?
On-camera flashes are convenient but do not render beautiful photographs. Everyone is familiar with that "flash during a party" look, with red eyes, flat with no shadows, etc. For good photographs, the light needs to be off-camera, and with Illuminant you are able to use your device you carry with you for that purpose

  • Can I choose any color I want?
Illuminant is a photography tool, and as such only lets you choose the colors within a section of the light spectrum used in photography. From the color of Sunset (2500 K) to Blue hour skylight (10000 K), and anything in between. Just like the AWB settings in your camera, you can also choose from presets like Tungsten, Daylight, Overcast, etc.

  • Can I use any catchlight pattern I want?
Illuminant is a photography tool, and as such only simulates typical lighting patterns and studio lights such as Umbrella, Beauty Dish, Soft Box etc.
